Introduction

Do you feel like your business is growing and expanding to a point where you are no longer able to cope with the various demands of running the operations and also maintaining all the paperwork? This is where a business with great potential can start to crack without you realising. Paperwork is as important as running the business to ensure the business is complying with the legal requirements and keeping a good record to ensure all expenses are closely monitored, recorded and claimed for tax purposes. Good record keeping can also help you to stay in control and make you feel confident, and help you to avoid stressing out when your tax returns are due.

This is where you could benefit from having an in-house administrator/bookkeeper.

What is an administrator?

Before you decide what is best for your company, whether it’s a growing organisation or just a few people starting, where an administrator could be important as part of your company formation, you should have a clear understanding of what an administrator does and what their role would be to assist you.

The job of an administrator is to perform clerical tasks and projects to ensure that the office can function and run smoothly. These tasks can vary widely depending on the industry; however some of the most common things an administrator could help with across fields are organising project meetings, bookkeeping, typing up documents and responding to business enquiries. They could also assist you by drawing up contracts as well as providing customer service.

What skills to look for in an administrator

An administrator is likely to deal with customers and respond to enquiries, and work with the team, so somebody with great customer service skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work well with others as well as on their own is necessary. This is important to ensure the office can run efficiently.

It is also common for an administrator to process information using a computer, so they would need strong IT skills. Being thorough and having good attention to detail would also be beneficial.

Why should I consider an in-house administrator?

As this is a role that requires outwardly facing elements, including responding to business enquiries as well as providing customer service, it could be beneficial to you to have an in-house administrator. This would allow them to more fully understand your business and your needs so that they can correspond with the public and potential clients for the utmost success.

There is also considerable opportunity for career progression as an administrator, so hiring an in-house administrator might be something to think about if you would consider keeping the candidate as part of your company for a significant period of time.

Considering this, it might be a good idea to look into appointing an in-house administrator for your company.
